Are your Safe Working Load (SWL) Signs Putting your Business at Risk?

At RackSAFE, we’re always looking out for our clients, and recently we’ve noticed an increase in unannounced workplace health and safety visits across various industries. One key area where businesses are being caught out is the display and adherence to Safe Working Load (SWL) signs.

Safe Working Load Signs
SWL signs are essential for maintaining a safe working environment. They communicate the maximum load your racking systems can safely handle, helping to prevent accidents, injuries, and racking collapses. Without clear and up-to-date signage, your staff may unknowingly overload the system, which could lead to devastating consequences.

The Legal Requirements

Under Australian Standards and workplace safety regulations, SWL signs must be clearly visible, securely attached, and accurate. Failure to comply can result in significant legal and financial consequences…

What's at Stake?

Employee Safety

Overloaded racking can lead to devastating racking collapses, risking serious injuries or even fatalities.

Fines & Shutowns

Non-compliance with health and safety standards can cost your business in more ways than one—through fines, operational delays, and legal action.

Disruptions

A racking collapse doesn’t just endanger your staff; it can halt your business operations, cause costly damage to stock, and impact your bottom line.

What We've Seen Over The Years

During audits we’ve come across some SWL signs that would get any business into hot water during a health and safety inspection. Here are some examples:
Damaged SWL Signs

Faded or Illegible Signs: Over time, exposure to the elements can fade your signs, making them impossible to read. If your staff can’t clearly see the load limit, they can’t follow it, which is a major red flag for inspectors.

Improperly Fixed Signs: We’ve seen SWL signs that are zip-tied, taped, or even hanging loosely from the racking. To be compliant, SWL signs must be securely screwed into the racking—not loosely fastened—otherwise, you risk fines and safety violations.

Outdated, Incorrect or Amended Information: Racking systems evolve, so their load ratings must as well. We’ve come across signs that still show old load capacities, or businesses have amended their signs by hand, which is not allowed. If you’ve changed your racking, you need to update your SWL signs accordingly, and this must be done professionally –  NO DIY FIXES!
